Ramapo, NY – Japanese students at Rockland Community College have been working tirelessly to raise funds to help those at home who have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami of March 11. RCC hosts many international students each year, and 30 of the approximately 160 of this year’s scholars are from Japan. They were able to raise over $5,300 through various activities on campus.
On May 24, several students, along with alumna and adjunct instructor in music, Kaoru Miyauchi, brought a check to the Consulate-General of Japan in NYC. Students Yuko Ota, Kae Iwatsuki, and Lina Zhou accompanied by RCC Student Activities Director John Marra, gave the Consul a check for $3,500. The Consul, Runiko Ishigami, assured them there would be no administrative overhead; all these funds would go to help people. The remaining $1,800 is going directly to the people of Miyauchi’s home prefecture, a region which includes areas directly affected by the disaster.
