Tappan Woman Pleads Guilty; Admits to Concocting Firefighter Theft Story


Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe today announced that Kam Yung (DOB 07/13/61) Tappan, New York has pled guilty to:

* One count of Attempted Falsely Reporting an One count of Attempted Falsely Reporting an Incident in the Third Degree, a class “B” Misdemeanor
On April 23, 2010, at approximately 5:23 p.m., the Orangetown Police Department, along with the Tappan, Sparkill and Orangeburg fire departments responded to 56 Constitution Drive in Tappan on the report of a structure fire.


The volunteer fire departments extinguished the blaze with no injury to the residents.


At approximately 8:00 p.m. on the same date, Yung contacted the Orangetown Police Department to report that $7,000 cash and jewelry had been stolen from her bedroom by the volunteer firefighters.


An investigation by Orangetown detectives revealed that the defendant lied to the police; there was never $7,000 cash in her bedroom and jewelry was not missing. Yung also admitted to filing a false report with the police.


Upon accepting the guilty plea in the Town of Orangetown Justice Court, the defendant was sentenced to community service. Yung was also ordered to pay a fine, a surcharge and write a letter of apology to the volunteers of the Tappan, Sparkill and Orangeburg fire departments.
