Legislator Day Announces Extended Saturday Hours for Residents at the Clarkstown Solid Waste Facility

New City, NY (June 21st, 2011) – Rockland County Legislator Ed Day (New City-Pomona) today announced extended Saturday operating hours for yard waste residential drop off  at the Rockland County Solid Waste Authority (RCSWA) Clarkstown site.

Legislator Day, who also serves as a Board member for the Solid Waste Authority, was contacted by constituents about the difficulty in getting to and dropping off yard waste on Saturdays by the 12:00 noon closing time. Residents had expressed to Legislator Day the noon closing time meant starting their Saturday work extremely early just in order to get any quantity of yard waste collected, loaded, and transported, and asked that consideration be given to extending the hours slightly.
“As someone who works all week in the city, and does outdoor chores on weekends just like my neighbors, I could see that their point was most valid”, said Legislator Day, adding that “this was a perfect opportunity to do what elected officials should – bring their constituents’ voice directly to the table of government.”

At a subsequent Board meeting for the RCSWA, Legislator Day requested that the Board Chairman, Ramapo Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence, allow the matter be brought forward as new business to the agenda. Once approved, the concerns were conveyed to the Authority’s Director. After review, the decision was made to extend the Saturday hours from 7:00 AM to 12:00 noon to 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM, affording residents an additional two and a half hours to drop off their yard waste.

As important was the fact that the RCSWA was able to extend the hours without additional cost to taxpayers and have already seen a number of additional residents dropping off yard waste at the facility between noon and 2:30 PM. The RCSWA will continue to monitor use from 12 noon to 2:30pm for the remainder of the season so a final determination regarding operating hours for next year can be made.
The RCSWA Chairman, Christopher St. Lawrence, said “It is always a positive thing when we here at the Solid Waste Authority can effectively address the concerns that our residents bring to us.”

Legislator Day closed by saying “It is a great feeling to be able to so rapidly and effectively address the valid concerns of the constituents I serve and make their lives just a little bit easier. I thank the Board Chairman, my fellow RCSWA Board members, and the staff of the Rockland County Solid Waste Authority for their support and rapid response to this matter.”

The Rockland County Solid Waste Authority telephone number is 753-2200; the website is http://www.rocklandrecycles.com/, and the Clarkstown RCSWA facility is located at 166 South Route 303, West Nyack, just south of Route 59.
