Indictment Handed Up in New Square Arson Attack

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe today announced that an indictment has been handed up against Shaul Spitzer (DOB 05/07/93) of New Square, New York charging him with the crimes of:

•One count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, a class “B” Violent Felony

•One count of Attempted Arson in the Second Degree, a class “C” Violent Felony

•Two counts of Assault in the First Degree, class “B” Violent Felonies
In the early morning hours of May 22, 2011, Spitzer is alleged to have brought incendiary materials to the Truman Avenue home of Aron Rottenberg. When Rottenberg confronted the defendant, the accelerant burst into flames, resulting in extensive second and third-degree burns to the victim’s upper body and arms. The Town of Ramapo Police Department investigated the incident and arrested defendant later that same morning.

Spitzer suffered third-degree burns across his hands and arms.

District Attorney Zugibe said, “This defendant’s senseless actions critically injured the victim and placed the lives of five others at grave risk. If not for the quick response of other residents in the home, this accelerant-fueled arson attack had the potential to injure or kill several people. When crimes such as this regrettably occur, they will be vigorously prosecuted and severely punished.”

Arraignment is scheduled for June 24 at 9:30 am before the Honorable William A. Kelly.

Spitzer faces a maximum of 25 years in state prison if convicted.
