RAMAPO, New York – A four-run seventh inning for the New York Federals proved to be the difference as they won game four against the Rockland Boulders at Provident Bank Park, 9-5, in Can-Am League action.
A pair of two-RBI singles gave the Federals a 9-3 lead in the seventh. Brad Jackson, who went 4-for-5 with a triple and a solo home run, hit a bases loaded single to bring in the first two runs of the inning, which would have been enough for New York to earn the victory.
Once again, Jermel Lomack reached base to start the game for the Boulders. This time, Lomack hit a double down the left field line. Ray Stokes bunted for an infield single to put runners on the corners for the Boulders, but Lomack was gunned down at the plate on Sean Smith’s grounder to third and Rockland came away without a run.
New York (5-25) got to Rockland starter Bobby Blevins in the second inning. Three straight hits to start the inning brought in two runs for the Federals. Stokes started a double play to empty the bases, but Blevins allowed two straight base runners to reach base. Alex Sumner punched a double into right field to plate Robert Dyer and leave New York with a 3-0 lead.
Rockland threatened again in the third. With the bases loaded and just one out, Cristobal Santana popped up to the catcher and Tommy Giles struck out to strand three runners on base. Vic Buttler was ejected arguing balls and strikes in the third inning. Last night, New York’s Sandy DeLeon was ejected for the same.
The Federals scored another run in the fourth. Jackson led off with a triple to the warning track in right field. Dyer brought him in with a single up the middle to give New York a 4-0 lead.
After two quick outs to start the home half of the fifth, Smith bunted for a single, and then stole second base. Cristobal Santana hit a line drive to the left field wall to bring Smith around to score. Sumner, the second baseman, threw a Giles ground ball into the Boulders dugout to allow Santana to score the second Rockland run. Another error by New York’s starter James Kukucka brought in Giles for the Boulders’ third run and left Mollica on second base.
Jackson led off the sixth with a solo shot to the left field bleachers off reliever Justin Fry to increase the Federals lead to two runs.
Drew Coffey came in to pitch for the Boulders in the seventh. He gave up a ground-rule double to start the inning to Eddie Lantigua, and then walked the next two batters, forcing manager Dave LaPoint to remove him from the game with the bases loaded. Kyle Wilson came on in relief with just one out and gave up a single to Jackson to add two more runs for the Federals. Jacob Fabry hit a high chopper that was just out of Santana’s reach and brought in another two for the Federals, leaving them with a 9-3 lead in the seventh.
Smith was standing on second base with two outs when lefty Peter Larson was brought into the game to face Giles. Giles hit a line drive that quickly cleared the short porch for his third home run of the season, leaving the Boulders down 9-5 after seven frames.
The Boulders loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with two outs. Ryan Mollica, who has a walk off home run on the season, was unable to reach base, ending the game.
The Rockland Boulders (11-16) will head up to Worcestor, MA on Tuesday to begin a four-game series in Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field Tuesday evening. First pitch will be thrown at 7:05 pm. Rockland sends its only lefty Roger Lincoln (1-2) returns to his spot in the rotation on Tuesday and will take on Worcestor’s left-hander Zach Zuercher (5-2).
