New City, NY— United Hospice of Rockland’s (UHR) Executive Director Amy Stern has announced that construction of the Joe Raso Hospice Home is continuing on schedule.  She said that completion is anticipated by year’s end.

She said, “ We used to say that hospice was not a place, but only a way of caring. However, for our seriously ill loved ones, friends and neighbors who live alone, with no support system in place to complement Hospice’s program of care, who live with an elderly or infirm partner whose own condition prevents them from being able to provide adequate care or support, who come from institutional settings or return from having spent time outside the community, who have no home to which they can return, or have families who are fearful of caring for their loved ones at home during their final phases of life, the options that have been available in our community are limited.  Some end up living (and dying) in nursing homes, while others find they must leave the area-and their family, health care providers, clergy, neighbors, and friends-to enter a residential facility outside of Rockland County. The Joe Raso Hospice Home will provide a residence for these individuals and others who will benefit from United Hospice of Rockland’s care and services in a home-like setting.

“Very shortly, United Hospice of Rockland will be able to offer individuals facing advanced illness a beautiful home-like environment in which they will receive the highest quality of care available.  As they and their family members enter the doors of the Joe Raso Hospice Residence, they will know that when time matters most, they came to the right place.  We are so very grateful to everyone who has contributed time, talent and financial support to make this project possible.   The completion of this project will help us to close a gap in the continuum of care that has existed for far too long.”

UHR Director of Development Lanie Etkind said that with Joe Raso’s generous challenge to match dollar for dollar of up to $150,000 UHR expects to reach the total $6 million fundraising goal. She also said that UHR is establishing the Jeffery Wasserman Walk of Honor, a specially designed path with engraved bricks.  Those who wish to participate in the challenge grant or the Walk of Honor may contact Lanie Etkind at 845 634-4974letkind@hospiceofrockland.org.

The Joseph Raso Hospice Home will offer a residential environment, together with the full complement of Hospice’s comfort-oriented care and services including expert pain and symptom management, nursing care, assistance with the tasks of daily living (feeding, bathing, etc.), friendly visiting by volunteers, spiritual and psycho-social counseling for patients and their loved ones, and bereavement counseling and support groups for surviving family members.
