Update: Suffern PD Officers Climb Down Quarry Wall to Assist in Rescue of a Local Young Man--Suicide Attempt Suspected

(See below for updated information )
A local young man was rescued after apparently jumping off the edge of the former Tilcon Quarry in Suffern.

The young man, whose name and age are being withheld, allegedly jumped off the top of the quarry wall, hitting the sides on the way down in an apparent suicide attempt at approximately 6:50pm.

Responding Suffern Officers Rick Marsh and Glen Wilson scrambled down the side of the steep quarry wall because they could see the young man had a serious head wound and were concerned that he was in danger of losing consciousness and ending up facedown in the water before other rescuers could arrive on the scene.

Suffern Volunteer Firefighters responded as did the Mahwah Fire Department with a boat.  The Sloatsburg Volunteer Fire Department’s Dive Team and the Ramapo Police Department also assisted in the rescue.

The young man was transported to Good Samaritan hospital and was listed in serious condition. The Ramapo Police Department is conducting an investigation.
