Zebrowski and Day seek to ease New City construction disruptions

Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski (D-New City) and Rockland County Legislator Ed Day (R-New City) have been leading coordinated efforts between the Town of Clarkstown and the County of Rockland in two separate construction projects that will revamp New Hempstead Road and South Main Street in New City.  The $32 million New Hempstead Road project, which began on June 3rd, and the South Main Street project will make major road improvements to New City.

Legislator Ed Day and Assemblyman Zebrowski hosted a meeting last week to coordinate efforts on both construction projects that were attended by officials from the Town of Clarkstown, Clarkstown Police Department, Rockland County Highway department and the Sheriff’s office. They pushed for an open and coordinated process with the community as the major undertaking occurs. Zebrowski and Day insisted that plans for the construction posted on both the County and Town websites including construction timelines and upcoming road detours.
“It is important that both construction projects work in conjunction with the community to ensure that there is minimal disruption to businesses and residents,” said Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski.

“Coordination, information flow, and respect for the community living with this project are the matters uppermost in my mind, and I am heartened by the cooperative spirit shown to date by both the County of Rockland and the Town of Clarkstown. With effective follow through by the project engineers, I have great hope we will get through these projects a smoothly as possible, resulting in New City being the beacon for Rockland County.” said Legislator Day

As part of the construction, there will be necessary, additional tree removal along New Hempstead Road in order to make room for movement of power poles and road improvements that includes a pedestrian and bike path. While this work will be handled by Orange and Rockland, County project engineers assure the public that all tree work will be strictly reviewed and approved prior to any work being done.

The Town of Clarkstown is in the process of constructing a website that will address community concerns and expected construction impact for the duration of the South Main Street construction and the New City Revitalization project. Citizens are assured that, in the interim, calls made to the Clarkstown Town supervisor’s office – (845) 639-2050 - will be fielded and responded to promptly.
