New City, NY (May 31, 2011)– Rockland County Legislature Chairwoman Harriet Cornell will receive the Excellence in Leadership Award from the Early Care & Learning Council, a statewide organization, based in Albany that works to increase the quality, affordability and capacity of the early care and learning field.
Chairwoman Cornell, an influential advocate for development of children and youth, played a leading role in the creation of Rockland Schools of the 21st Century (Rockland 21C), a collaborative of family, school, community and government, that focuses on the optimal development of every child. Since its inception, Rockland 21C has established 40 family resource centers throughout the county’s eight school districts and runs a literacy-based home visitation program for 2 and 3-year-olds utilizing trained Americorps members. Jane Brown, Executive Director of Child Care Resources of Rockland, an affiliate of the statewide council, nominated Cornell for the award. Brown said, “There is no question of Harriet's recognition of the value and importance of investing in our children's early care and learning. She has clearly demonstrated excellence, creativity and initiative as a leader in our county.”
Marsha Basloe, Executive Director of the Early Care & Learning Council, said that the leadership award recognizes individuals or organizations that have shown exemplary leadership in advancing high quality early care and education in New York State. “The council will present this award to Chairwoman Cornell,” said Basloe, “in recognition of her commitment and dedication to what matters for children and families in her community.”
“What an honor,” said Chairwoman Cornell, “and how fortunate that I have had the opportunity as a Legislator to create public policy to help children thrive.”
The award will be presented to Cornell at the council’s Annual Meeting on June 15, 2011 in Voorheesville, NY.
