Boulders Fall in Newark, 11-2: Bears Bats Heat Up at Home to Defeat Rockland

RAMAPO, New York – The home field advantage was evident at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium Tuesday afternoon as the Rockland Boulders fell to the Newark Bears (19-19), 11-2, in Can-Am League action.

After sweeping the Bears in a three-game swing at Provident Bank Park, the Boulders were only able to record four base hits as the road team in Tuesday’s matinée matchup in Newark.

Sloppy defense by the Boulders allowed the Bears to get on the board in the first inning.  With two outs, Chase Weems threw the ball into centerfield trying to catch Tim Raines Jr. stealing.  Ryde Rodriguez tried to throw Raines Jr. out at third, but he threw it into the visitors’ dugout, allowing Raines Jr. to score the first run of the game.

Tommy Giles once again got to the Bears pitchers in his first at bat.  Giles tied the game in the top of the second with a solo home run over the right field flagpole, his fifth of the season.

The Boulders added another run in the third.  Chase Weems stood on third as Cole Kraft hit a slow roller to first base.  Billy Alvino threw home, but a great slide by Weems gave the Boulders the 2-1 lead.

The game was quickly tied once again as a Tim Raines Jr. sacrifice fly in the home half of the third brought Kyle Davis in from third base.

Newark grabbed the lead on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth.  Juan Martinez turned on a John Muller fastball and hit it well over the left field wall to give the Bears a 3-2 lead.  The runs kept coming as four more hits led to three more Newark runs, including a two-RBI triple by Raines Jr.

The Bears added some more insurance in the bottom of the eighth.  With two runners on, Kyle Davis singled to left field, bringing in both base runners.  Daryle Ward added three more on his sixth home run of the year, making the score 11-2.

The Boulders (15-20) will return home on Wednesday for an evening matchup with the Worcestor Tornadoes.  First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. at Provident Bank Park.
