RAMAPO, New York – A rain shortened game ended in a 5-0 victory for the New Jersey Jackals over the Rockland Boulders at Provident Bank Park on Monday night.
Justin Fry made the spot start for the Boulders, and tossed three scoreless innings and struck out five Jackals batters.
Rockland’s original starter, Ryan Knippschild, arrived late due to travel and entered the game in the fourth inning. He got the first batter he faced to line out, but Nick Giarraputo followed with a triple and was then singled in by Jordan Newton. Newton scored later in the inning on a Nick Santomauro groundout to give the Jackals a 2-0 lead.
The Jackals doubled that lead in the top of the fifth. After Mike DeJesus singled, Leonard Davis hit a long home run over the Corona Short Porch in right field to increase New Jersey’s lead to four.
New Jersey got on the board for the third straight inning in the top of the sixth. Chris Anderson singled to left with Newton on second, bringing him around to score the fifth Jackal run.
In the bottom of the seventh, the sky opened up and the rain poured down on the field at Provident Bank Park. The thunder and lightning, along with the rain, were enough to have the game called in the middle of the seventh.
The Boulders (1-1, 20-28) will play the final of a three game series with the New Jersey Jackals Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Jon Velasquez (3-3) will take his turn in the Boulders’ rotation Tuesday night. He will go head-to-head with New Jersey’s James Leverton (6-3).
