LITTLE FALLS, New Jersey – The Rockland Boulders blew a nine run lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the New Jersey Jackals stormed back to defeat the Boulders 11-10 on Wednesday afternoon in Can-Am League action.
Will Hassett, who pitched a quality game for the Boulders, took the no decision after shutting down the Jackals’ offense to only one run on eight hits while striking out four through seven innings of work.
The Jackals took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, on an RBI single from Jordan Newton that scored Kris Sanchez from Second. For Newton, that was ninth run batted in on the season in 15 games for New Jersey.
The Boulders though, grabbed their first lead in the top of the third that was capped off by a bases clearing double from Norm Hutchins. Hutchins, who was reacquired earlier in the week, drove the one-one pitch off the left field wall to drive in three Boulders, which gave Rockland a 4-1 edge. Earlier, Jeremy Slayden picked up his fifth RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly that tied the game.
Rockland continued their offensive power surge with five runs on five hits in the top of the sixth to take a 9-1 run lead. Cole Kraft highlighted the frame for the Boulders with a three run home run, his second of the season, to give the Boulders a then 8-1 edge. Later in the inning, Cristobal Santana plated Slayden from second for his 20th run batted in.
New Jersey, though, tacked on 10 unanswered runs off of Rockland relief pitching in the eighth on nine hits to move past the Boulders for the third straight time this week.
Adrian Martin suffered the loss after giving up two runs on four hits, while Mike Moore earned his first win only giving up one run in two innings of work.
Rockland has Thursday off, before heading to Quebec for a three games series that starts on Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Capitales.
