Community Event Focuses on Re-Use and Re-Cycling of Clothing

Not for profit home care agency to hold gigantic clothing swap to raise funds for low-income homebound individuals in Rockland County, NY

The Rockland County 2011 “SWAP-O-RAMA-RAMA” is coming on Saturday, August 6th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Home Aides of Rockland, Inc. invites the public to join in the communal process of reuse and celebrate our collective creativity! Swap-O-Rama is a giant clothing swap and series of do-it-yourself workshops in which a community explores reuse and creativity through the recycling of used clothing. The event will take place at the Germonds Church Fellowship Hall (39 Germonds Road, New City, NY 10956, just off exit 10 on the Palisades Interstate Parkway)

At this Swap-O-Rama-Rama a host of talent is being brought together to teach participants how to transform new or used clothing into works of their own. There will be DIY Stations to learn many wonderful ways to create fashions out of textile reuse; Sewing Stations where local designers will teach fresh clothing modification tricks; and on site artists with a host of original designs.

Of course the core of the swap is the gigantic piles of clothing and accessories sorted into categories: pants, shirts, skirts, sweaters etc. for women, men and children and infants. These piles are the collective total of each guest’s contribution of any size bag of unwanted clothes. So clean out those closets and let go of what's no longer inspiring, clothing that you have not worn in a year; new and never worn fantasy sizes; well-meaning gifts that are just not you; or impulse buys that are collecting dust. Take home as much clothing as you can carry. Remainders go to local not-for-profits. Clothing will not be accepted in advance of the event or without paid entry of $10 per person (children under 10 years enter free).

This Swap-O-Rama is a fundraiser for Home Aides of Rockland, Inc., a licensed not-for-profit home care agency. All proceeds from the event will support the Reduced Rate Home Care Program, making high quality home care financially accessible to those coping with frailty, chronic illness and disability. Sewing machines are generously supplied for the day by Above & Beyond Creative Sewing Shops of Nanuet.
