Pomona, N.Y. – Bobby Blevins outdueled Isaac Pavlik as the Rockland Boulders handed the New Jersey Jackals a 2-1 loss to open up the second half of the Can-Am League season on Sunday evening at Provident Bank Park. The loss was Pavlik’s first of the season in nine decisions.
In the Jackals’ quickest contest of the season at two hours, 13 minutes, Pavlik (8-1) allowed just two runs on six hits over eight innings while turning in his league-leading fourth complete game of the season. Blevins (5-3) surrendered one run on four hits over eight frames, striking out four and walking one to earn the victory.
All three runs in the contest came across in the fourth inning. In the top of the frame, Jackals’ shortstop Mike DeJesus led off with a hustle double to center, advanced to third when Leonard Davis grounded out to the right side, and scored on a base hit to center off the bat of catcher Myron Leslie to give the Jackals a 1-0 advantage.
That lead would be short lived, however, as the Boulders tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when the first four batters of the frame reached base against Pavlik. After shortstop Mike Richard led off with a single and stole second, second baseman Cole Kraft walked to put a pair of runners aboard. Catcher Scott Clement followed with a single to right and Richard beat Nick Santomauro’s throw to the plate to even the score. The next batter, former Jackal Jeremy Slayden, laced an RBI single to center to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run.
In the top of the ninth, Jackals’ designated hitter Mike Jones reached base as the tying run with a two-out single, but Rockland closer Adrian Martin escaped the jam when Nick Giarraputo flew out to the wall in right center to end the ballgame.
In the losing effort, Jones finished the day 2-for-4 as three of New Jersey’s five hits went for extra bases.
The Jackals and Boulders play the second contest of their four-game series on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at Provident Bank Park when New Jersey sends right-hander Shaun Ellis (3-1, 5.40 ERA) to the mound while Rockland has yet to name a starter. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com.
