Engel Announces Housing Grants for Spring valley, Ramapo

Congressman Eliot Engel announced U.S. Housing and Urban Development grants for the Spring Valley ($165,894) and Ramapo ($182,616) Housing Authorities for development, financing, and modernization of public housing projects.

Rep. Engel said, “Decent housing is not only a necessity, it is good for the community as a whole. These housing grants can be used for a variety of programs including vacancy reduction, redesign, reconstruction, and reconfiguring sites, addressing deferred maintenance needs, replacing obsolete utility systems, and code compliance among the host of uses.
“This money will make existing housing better, which is an improvement for the community, as well as the people who live in it.”

Other available uses for the money include establishing computer centers through Neighborhood Networks initiatives to enhance self-sufficiency, employability and economic self-reliance.  This is accomplished by providing on-site computer access and training resources.

Rep. Engel said, “These grants not only improve buildings, they improve lives. This is government help at its best, by allowing people to help themselves.”
